The Day I Learned My Kitchen Had a Name
The other day, my daughter and her friends came for a visit. As they peeked into the pantry and refrigerator, one of them laughed and said, "You have an ingredient kitchen." I wasn't sure if it was a compliment or a diagnosis, but after they explained it, I realized they were absolutely right.
And apparently, what was once just called having a pantry is now part of a whole new kitchen philosophy. Who knew? I guess I've been ahead of the trends without even knowing it. I didn't realize I was building an ingredient kitchen. I thought I was just making sure I had enough flour, sugar, beans, and butter so I didn't have to run to the grocery store every time I wanted to make supper.

And let's be honest, there's nothing fancy about opening the pantry and playing a little game of "What can I make with this?" Some of our best meals have started that way. Sometimes it's a culinary masterpiece, and sometimes it's a casserole that needs a little extra cheese to convince everyone it's supposed to look like that.
But that's the beauty of cooking with ingredients instead of instructions written on a box. You learn to improvise, use what you have, stretch a dollar, and occasionally create something so good that everyone asks you to make it again. Of course, there are also those experiments we'd rather not discuss. Every kitchen has secrets!
So if having flour on the shelf, beans in the cupboard, and a freezer full of garden goodies makes me part of the ingredient kitchen movement, I guess I'll happily take the title. Just don't ask me to start calling my junk drawer a curated household resource. 😂
So, from my ingredient kitchen to yours, here's a Rooted in Reality favorite: Golden Goodness Cornbread & Country Beans!
A little old-fashioned comfort, a sweet corn twist, and a whole lot of goodness without breaking the grocery budget.
What's one staple ingredient you always keep on hand? I'd love to hear what makes your kitchen an ingredient kitchen. 🌽🫘❤️
